  2.                    Setting Up LAN Post Offices and Mailboxes
  3.                         to Work with the Object Exchange

  7. The Object Exchange lets you use your existing local area network
  8. to send and receive objects by setting up LAN post offices and 
  9. mailboxes. A LAN post office is a directory to which all users in
  10. your workgroup have access, and a mailboxes are subdirectories 
  11. contained within the post office directory.
  12.  
  13. To use the Object Exchange with your LAN,
  14.  
  15. 1. Create a post office by selecting a shared area to which all of
  16.    your correspondents have access, and creating a directory. For 
  17.    example, J:\OBEXPOST, where J: is the name of a network drive 
  18.    and OBEXPOST is the name of the post office.
  19.  
  20. 2. Create a mailbox for each user by creating subdirectories under 
  21.    the post office directory. For example, J:\OBEXPOST\USER1 and
  22.    J:\OBESPOST\USER2.
  23.  
  24. 3. When you configure your LAN account in the Object Exchange, enter
  25.    the mailbox name (for example, USER1) in the Mailbox Name edit field,
  26.    and the post office path in the Post Office Path edit field (for 
  27.    example, J:\OBEXPOST).
  28.  
  29. 4. If you want to protect your correspondents' privacy, give the 
  30.    following capabilities to users by assigning the appropriate 
  31.    network rights to each mailbox:
  32.  
  33.    * Read and delete files for the mailbox owner
  34.    * Scan, create, and write files for all other users
  35.    
  36.    For detailed information on how to assign rights to mailboxes on
  37.    various LANs, see the instructions below.
  38.  
  39. If you want to experiment on your own, you can create post office
  40. and mailbox directories on your local hard disk, and mail and publish
  41. objects to yourself.

  48. 1. Log in to the Banyan server from a network workstation.
  49.  
  50. 2. When prompted, enter your login name. Enter either your Banyan 
  51.    nickname or your full StreetTalk user name, including your group    
  52.    and organization names.
  53.  
  54. 3. When prompted, enter your password. If you don't have a password, 
  55.    or if this is the first time you've logged on to the first server 
  56.    on a network, press Enter.
  57.  
  58. 4. After the server displays a report on network resources activated 
  59.    during your login, a logical drive designator appears, just like a 
  60.    DOS prompt:

  62.    E:\>

  64.    This is the default login drive for the Banyan network system just 
  65.    after Banyan system installation. If you've set a different default 
  66.    drive in your user profile, the drive you set appears instead.

  68. 5. Create a directory for the Object Exchange post office files. For
  69.    example:
  70.

  73.    MD PO
  74.  
  75. 6. Create one directory, or mailbox, in the post office directory for 
  76.    each user. For example:
  77.  
  78.    CD PO
  79.    MD USER1
  80.    MD USER2  etc.

  82. 7. Set the access rights list for the post office directory and the user
  83.    directories using SETARL.
  84.  
  85.    The SETARL program sets the access rights list for a resource. When 
  86.    the program prompts you for the directory name, enter the post office
  87.    directory name (for exmaple, PO). For the post office directory, 
  88.    enable all access rights -- Owner, Group, and World -- for all users.
  89.    For each user mailbox, enable W (rite) and C (reate) only, and set
  90.    the ownership correctly.

  93. for more information about access rights.

  100. 1. Run NET ADMIN for the server to open the Lan Manager Administrator
  101.    window.
  102.  
  103. 2. From the Lan Manager Administrator window, determine what security 
  104.    mode you're running in by selecting Config from the menu and choosing
  105.    Server options. If user security is checked, you're in user security
  106.    mode. If it isn't, you're in share security mode.
  107.  
  108.    Installation differs depending on the security mode. For user security
  109.    mode, follow these instructions:
  110.  
  111.    a. Choose View|Shared Resources to open the Shared Resources at 
  112.       \\SERVER dialog box, where SERVER is the name of your server.
  113.  
  114.    b. Choose Add Share.
  115.  
  116.    c. When you see a list, select Disk Directory and choose OK.
  117.  
  118.    d. Type the name you want for your post office in the Sharename 
  119.       text box (for example, PO).
  120.  
  121.    e. If your applications are installed on drive C, type C:\APPS\PO 
  122.       in the Path text box.  
  123.  
  124.    f. Choose OK to confirm settings and OK to create directory.
  125.  
  126.    g. Lan Manager opens the Select a File for Access Permissions 
  127.       dialog box.  With <current directory> selected, press Enter.
  128.  
  129.    h. You see the Access Permissions for \\SERVER \PO dialog box, where
  130.       SERVER is your server name.  Choose the W (rite) and C (reate)
  131.        permissions.
  132.  
  133.    i. Move to the Not permitted list and highlight the *USERS group and
  134.       choose Permit to transfer the *USERS group to the Permitted list.  
  135.       You should see *USERS (WC) in the Permitted list. Repeat this
  136.       procedure until all users have WC permission to the post office. 
  137.       Choose OK to confirm your settings.

  139.    j. Lan Manager returns to the Select a File for Access Permissions 
  140.       dialog box.  Choose Done.
  141.  
  142.    k. Lan Manager returns to the Shared Resources at \\SERVER dialog 
  143.       box, where "SERVER" is your server name.  Choose Add share to 
  144.       add another sharename.  Choose disk directory and OK to confirm.

  146.    l. In the Share a Directory with the Network dialog box, type the 
  147.       name of a mailbox directory. It is recommended that you use the 
  148.       Lan Manager user name of the individual as the mailbox name for
  149.       ease of system administration.
  150.  
  151.    m. In the Path text box type
  152.  
  153.       C:\PO\mailbox name
  154.  
  155.       where mailbox name is the username of the individual for whom 
  156.       you are creating the mailbox.  Choose OK to confirm your settings
  157.       and OK to confirm that Lan manager should create the directory.
  158.  
  159.    n. Lan manager opens the Select a File for access Permissions dialog 
  160.       box. With <current directory> selected in the pick list, press 
  161.       Enter.
  162.  
  163.    o. Lan manager opens the Access Permissions dialog box.  Choose all
  164.       rights (the entire left hand column) and permit ONLY the owner of 
  165.       the mailbox to be on the Permitted list.  Repeat this step for all
  166.       mailboxes you need to create.
  167.  
  168.    p. Choose OK to confirm your settings. Choose Done at the Select a 
  169.       File for Access Permissions dialog box.  Choose Done at the 
  170.       Shared Resources at \\SERVER dialog box.  Exit from the Lan
  171.       Manager by choosing View|Exit.

  181.  1. From the server, log in as Root.
  182.  
  183.  2. Create a directory, set the ownership, group and permissions for 
  184.     the post office. Be sure you are in a file system with some
  185.     free space. For example,

  187.     mkdir PO
  188.     chown lmxadmin PO
  189.     chgrp DOS---- PO
  190.     chmod 777 PO
  191.  
  192.     where PO is the post office name
  193.  
  194.  3. Create directories for mailboxes, set the ownership, group and     
  195.     permissions. For example, 
  196.  
  197.     cd PO
  198.     mkdir user1
  199.     chown user1 user1
  200.     chgrp DOS---- user1
  201.     chmod 722 user1
  202.  
  203.  4. Logout of the server and login to a workstation with administrator 
  204.     rights and run WIN NETADMIN. (you can use the command line to 
  205.     administer StarGroup, consult the "Administering Lan Manager" guide 
  206.     for more information)

  208.  5. Set the focus on the server and then View|Shared Resources.
  209.  
  210.  6. Choose Add Share.
  211.  
  212.  7. When you see a list, select Disk Directory, then choose OK to confirm.
  213.  
  214.  8. Type the name you want for your post office in the Sharename text 
  215.     box (for example, PO).
  216.  
  217.  9. If your applications are installed on drive C, type C:\APPS\PO in the
  218.     Path text box. Choose OK to confirm settings.
  219.  
  220. 10. Lan Manager opens the File Permissions dialog box. Select Permit All.
  221.     Choose Save to save your settings and Done to exit the File 
  222.     Permissions dialog box.  Choose OK to confirm your settings.
  223.     Exit from the Administrative menu by choosing View|Exit.

  225. 11. No sharename needs to be set up for individual mailboxes, as the 
  226.     Unix permissions set on the directory should be sufficient.

  233. 1. At the server, select OS/2 full screen and run NET to open the IBM 
  234.    Lan Server Administrator window.
  235.  
  236. 2. From the IBM Lan Server Administrator window, select
  237.     Definitions|Aliases|Files.
  238.  
  239. 3. From the Manage Aliases-Files menu, highlight New then choose
  240.     Actions|Create from the menu.
  241.  
  242. 4. Complete the Create Aliases panel. Enter the path for the post 
  243.    office in the Server path to Directory box. Be sure to select At 
  244.    Server Startup for the When Shared box. Press Enter when done.
  245.             
  246. 5. At the Manage Aliases-Files menu, highlight the new alias you created 
  247.    and choose Access Profile|Create from the menu.
  248.  
  249. 6. Complete the Create the Access Control Profile form. Enter W (rite) 
  250.    and C (reate) in the Universal Access Permissions box. Press Enter
  251.    when done.
  252.  
  253. 7. Repeat steps 1-5 for each mailbox you need to create except select 
  254.    As Required by User at the When Shared box. Create the Create Access
  255.    Control Profile form with the same Universal Access Permissions as 
  256.    step 6.

  258. 8. At the Manage Aliases-Files menu, for each mailbox you create, 
  259.    select Access Profile|User List and add the permissions XRWCDAP for 
  260.    the owner of the mailbox. Press [Enter] when done.
  261.  
  262. 9. From the main IBM Lan Server Administrator window, select
  263.    Actions|Resource Sharing to be sure the post office directory 
  264.    is being shared.  The mailbox directories don't need to be shared.
